"Suit Up"
When I was a kid growing up in the UK the highlight of any shopping trip into town with my mother was disappearing off to the little newsagents on Scheregate Steps to get my American comic books fix. Being the only shop in Colchester that stocked these imports, you bought from their selection, or not at all, and you never knew what they would have delivered on any given month, so the disappointment of having to deal with a missed issue of a favourite superhero was almost too much to bare.
Yesterday afternoon was the pay-off for all my dedication to the cause. The Avengers is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, the superhero movie I have been waiting all my life for! I remember going to the cinema to see Christopher Reeves’ first outing as Superman, a movie that may seem a little cheesy now, but that night I walked out of the cinema and believed, if I wanted it bad enough, I could fly. The Avengers had a similar effect on me during its final good Vs evil showdown, I felt like I was ringside at a world title fight in Vegas living every punch as I urged our heroes on. I was literally on the edge of my seat with excitement!
Director and co-writer Joss Whedon has created a mightily enjoyable extravaganza and achieved something I did not think could be done in that each character has conquered that wounded solitariness normally so essential to the superhero identity, and teamed up with his contemporaries for this kick-ass romp. And it works. Boy does it work!
The plot is built around a tremendous performance from Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the loathsome Norse deity who embarrasses his wholesome sibling Thor with Earth-domination plans and general uncalled-for evilness, at one stage making a whole crowd of people kneel to him… in Germany no less. An aspirational move for any bad guy!
As the action heats up each of our superheroes does what they do best, Captain America is fearless, Iron Man is cocksure and daring, the Hulk is… well Whedon keeps us waiting in exquisite excitement for that which we know is to come, before we finally hear the words we have longed to hear. “HULK SMASH!” The action is so well directed and crafted that it’s almost as if each character is cameoing in the others’ movie.

Forget The Amazing Spider-Man, this really is the must-see superhero movie of 2012. And I will be making sure I see this again whilst it is on the big screen.
